Lucifer - S3E9 - The Sinnerman

Previously on Lucifer, “Chloe Does Lucifer”

CR: Ray Mickshaw / FOX

I Can’t Hide You

Lucifer and the gang have come so far in the past few years, it’s a testament to their characters that all their relationships have shifted and it feels completely natural for the audience while at the same time, it’s throwing the characters off their game. Luci is trying to get back to his favor-giving, Lothario ways but when two of his success stories turn up dead, he realizes he’s being called out by the Sinnerman. Chloe seems exasperated that he’s bringing this back up (we almost forgot too, girl) but she’s forced to believe him when Pierce backs up his story.

Let’s talk about Pierce and Chloe for a second. I’m not feeling it, y’all. I think it’s because the chemistry seemed to be building naturally and then Ella threw out her line about how Pierce was interested in Chloe and ever since then Chloe has acted like a flustered fool around him. It was one thing when she acted like a flustered fool because she thought her job was on the line, but Chloe is too grown and Lauren German is too stoic to pull off this CW-esque, rom-com, quirky thing they are trying to make her do. Stop it, Lucifer. You’re better than this.

Ok, back to the show. Now that Chloe believes in the Sinnerman, she starts working some leads not realizing Lucifer has gone after the Sinnerman on his own. The Sinnerman traps Lucifer until Maze tracks him down to yell at him (more on that later) while Chloe and Pierce find the Sinnerman, guest star Kevin Carroll from The Leftovers. Just the fact that they cast Kevin Carroll lets me know they are not playing around. Despite Lucifer questioning The Sinnerman’s sartorial choices, he’s going to be a formidable force.

It Was Bleeding

While Chloe and Lucifer are dealing with The Sinnerman, their friends are dealing with their personal issues. Maze returns in her usual fashion and she’s surprised to find Amenadiel and Dr. Linda are now besties. The two of them are sitting (closely) in her office laughing and Maze picks up on the impending sexual chemistry which sends her into a tailspin. She works through everything with Lucifer’s help, and she tells Dr. Linda that she doesn’t want her and Amenadiel to get together. I’m sure that ship has sailed.

Charlotte is also adjusting to her new life on the side of the prosecution. She tries to help Chloe with her mob contacts, but she doesn’t feel like she can really be good especially because she keeps falling into old patterns, like telling the mobsters not to talk to the cops. Luckily, Dan gives her a pep talk so we’re heading back towards the two of them getting together.

In the last scene, Chloe has arrested The Sinnerman and all Lucifer wants to do is look him in the eyes and find out what he desires. But that’s never going to happen because The Sinnerman is about that life, so much so that he pokes his own eyes out with a metal shiv. Game on.

I had to bring down the grade this week because the Pierce/Chloe stuff is just bad. Other than that, they’re setting up all the elements for a great mid-season finale. Maze is going to be in for a rude awakening because Dr. Linda and Amenadiel have a real connection that’s romantic and built on trust and respect. Dan and Charlotte are reconnecting and this time it’s actually Charlotte and not just The Mother in her body. And whatever The Sinnerman wants, Lucifer, Pierce, and Chloe will have wonder about it for a while. This should be interesting.
