With just one issue left in the series, the penultimate issue of Nailbiter gathered all of the key players to answer most of our questions.

The Master is unmasked, but Crane had already figured out his true identity. It’s Morty the Mortician. He took up the mantle started by Dr. Glory and later carried by his son, continuing the experiments that led to the creation of the Buckaroo Butchers, convincing those teenagers to attack him, and kidnapping Carroll.

The issue was a lot of exposition, but that’s to be expected. It wasn’t burdensome, though, thanks in large part to Henderson’s artwork. The flashbacks shift to black, white, and grey with violent splashes of red. Back in present day, as Morty reveals his plans for his captives (Finch, Crane, Alice, Warren, and Agent Barker), the panels are as gruesome and terrifying as ever. Finch is still bearing the marks of his torture, The Blonde’s remains are deposited on the floor for all to see, and Barker is forced to be the new Butcher in Black.

Her first task is to chase the other through the gauntlet as others before them have. Who will make it through alive, and who will they be if they do?
