New to Netflix: October 2012
Howdy, folks! Joseph here, and I’m bringing you some of that Netflix Instant Streaming goodness. As usual, I’ll be giving the release date, title, original year of release, and Netflix rating – if available. So, let’s bring it!
10/1 – Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) – This one will always hold a special place in my heart, because I performed in a gospel rendition of this movie while at Alabama State University. Anyway, this is the original film version; there has already been a 2001 remake, and there’s another one scheduled for 2014. I guess those predictions about the Mayans and 12/21/2012 are false, eh? This movie tells the story of Jesus’ last days on Earth, including his crucifixion and resurrection, and it’s set to ‘70s rock. Even if it’s for the music, it’s worth giving it a peek.

10/1 – Chariots of Fire (1981) – This movie will forever live in infamy as one of the first movies to win an Academy Award that my generation feels should’ve gone to another movie; in my case, “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” But, we’re not here to talk about that. Instead, we’re here to talk about the rousing tale of Eric Liddell, a Christian running for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, a Jew running to overcome prejudice. Hmm…looking at the lead characters, I can see why they picked this over “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” But, it has one of the most iconic scenes in movie history: the slow motion running on the beach set to the music of Vangelis.

10/1 – No Way Out (1987) – Starring Kevin Costner, Gene Hackman, and Sean Young, this is a thriller about a Naval officer who is investigating the murder of a young woman who was involved in a three way affair with the Secretary of Defense. This movie is full of heavy political implications, including those against the Soviets, and has an ending that will knock you off your feet.

10/1 – Dumb and Dumber: Unrated (1994)
10/1 – Presumed Innocent (1990) – Starring the always irascible Harrison Ford as a prosecutor who is accused of murdering a woman with whom he had an affair years ago. As with most of the movies of this ilk, the truth behind this is always stranger than fiction, as the movie takes you on a series of twists and turns, leaving you guessing until the very end. It’s a tight little thriller, and it’s certainly worth your time.

10/1 – Summer School (1987) – I love this little silly movie. It stars Mark Harmon as Freddy Shoop, an aloof gym teacher who doesn’t care about his job at all, looking forward to spending time with his girlfriend in Hawaii instead (I add parenthetically, an understandable position). Unfortunately for Shoop, the English teacher who was supposed to teach summer school wins the lottery and quits his job. This forces Vice Principal Phil Gills (Robin Thomas) to make Shoop take the job, insinuating that failure to do so would keep him from making tenure. Shoop has the entire summer to help a ragtag group of misfits pass English. This movie is just pure fun, and I love every second of it.

Lots of faves of mine, though a few I have on dvd or video. No Way Out I haven’t seen in years.
The movie in general isn’t very good, but Aaliyah is Queen of the Damned is a must-see. I kinda understand why R. Kelly couldn’t wait.
I don’t do celebrity crushes, but Aaliyah was as close as I got. She was amazing, and I was absolutely crushed when she died.
I used to LOVE Vincent Perez who was in that, though he hasn’t aged really well.
Oooo, Mulholland Drive is a great movie.
