The Flash - S4E16 - Run, Iris, Run

Previously on The Flash, “Enter Flashtime”

The Flash continues to be better than it has been most of this season with another solid episode. The few weak points were more than made up for with a fun role reversal in which Iris is given Barry’s speed.

Another bus meta, EMT Matthew Kim aka Melting Point (Leonardo Nam), has the power to take away a metahuman’s power by a touch and deposit that power in the next person he touches. He’s unaware of the latter and thinks he’s been taking away the powers of those who abuse them, like the man using his fire power to rob Kim’s bank. While questioning him about the incident, Kim gives Iris Barry’s power.

While the team works on a way to either reverse it or find Kim to make him do it, Iris becomes Central City’s Flash.

Up to Speed

Is there anything Candice Patton can’t do on this show? I hope the powers that be are thanking whatever higher power they believe in, daily, for casting this woman in this role.

Barry’s speed envy was realistic and I’m glad it played out as it did, with him realizing it was his turn to have the faith in Iris that she has always had in him.

Nice twist having Melting Point not realize he was transferring the powers, and it made for an easy to believe shift in him agreeing to help the team stop DeVoe (as well as allow them to keep him safe). I’m all for more Leonardo Nam. If you haven’t seen his work on Westworld, you’re missing out.

Another cool development was Harry having a hard-on to stop DeVoe due to intellectual envy. Now that they know DeVoe has been doing this for three years, Harry gets security footage outside S.T.A.R. Labs the night of the particle accelerator explosion and witnesses DeVoe getting his power via the thinking cap. At first, Cisco is against Harry’s plan to recreate that for himself to match wits, but he eventually gives in and it leads to Harry figuring out the names of the last two bus metas.

Speed Bumps

I wish the show (and most shows like this) would plant seeds earlier so the characters’ motivations and feelings feel authentic. Iris feeling as though she lost that fearless spirit she had as an investigative journalist is natural, but felt forced when the first we’re hearing of it is in the episode in which she becomes a speedster and Ralph womp womps all over her.

In the same vein, having the entire team be flummoxed by a guy shooting a lot of fire out of his hands just so Harry could prove his thinking cap worked felt forced as hell.

  1. For the podcast

I didn’t like it as much as last week’s episode but this one was still fun. Plus more Iris is always a good thing. I’m glad Iris is writing again. Still pissed she quit her job tho!

Love me some Felix! I hope he doesn’t get kilt by Country Devoe.

That’s it! Can’t wait to hear the podcast! Plus, do y’all think Barry & Iris had a little adult fun with her being the vibrating one this time? I’m just saying. Lol😉

  2. For the podcast:

I feel like our show is finally back! WestAllen continues to kill it. Barry was worried about Iris going to that fire as any man would be about a significant other, but when she said “I got this” he was confident enough to believe in her. I feel like that shit doesn’t always happen in pop culture, especially superhero shows. Ralph and Cisco pissed me off this episode, but by the end, they did redeem the self (well, as much as Gumby can redeem himself 🙄). Overall, I loved this episode, and Iris having speedster powers was everything I didn’t know that I needed. I loved it, and I really hope the shows stays on this up-spiral. Thanks as always for an amazing podcast!!!!

PS Wally is killing it on Legends!

  3. For the podcast

Omg I really liked this episode.
    1) Candice killed it!
    2) Barry being all worried about her was cute but a little annoying until he said it was because he lost his job because of Devoe
    3) The Cisco/Harry arguments are getting tired.
    4) Ralph reached the pick of annoyance. He had the nerve to talk like that with Iris.. I was abt to jump on his ass! Mothafucka wouldn’t even leave the lab! Ugh!
What she said at the end about the Savitar thing she could’ve said that at the beginning but anyways..
But at the end I was ok with him. That’s probably because I ship Candice and Hartley don’t @ me 😂
    5) Ok.. How Caitlin’s outfit fit Iris when Caitlin’s taller than her? 🤔
    6) Iris really did THAT! She created a tidal wave!! Something Barry never did..
    💜⚡
That’s it. Hope you guys have a great week!

  4. FOR THE PODCAST

If the CW was awesome, they would have named this episode the powah of the flash will now be strippeh eweh.

This episode was light hearted and amazing. Iris was amazing. She had that purple drank effects behind her and everyone in the cast was great except for Ralph.

Fuck Ralph and his play doh ass body. The way he was talking about Iris made me think he was getting toooooo comfortable and he racist. Yep I said it. Racist. Judy Winslow his ass please.

The only comfort I have is that Bell Biv DeVoe will probably suck the brain meat out Ralph. Fuck Ralph.

  5. For the podcast:

Episodes like this are the reason that no matter how shitty this season is, i can’t never quit this damn show.

  6. The positives: I love Iris. She is probably my favorite female character on TV. Barry saying, “That’s annoying” when she zipped out of their conversation made me laugh. Cisco not letting the power sucker touch him, “I like my powers.”
The Negative: stretch McGee. Oh how I hate thee.
At one point he shaded Iris and I literally told him to fuck off. Out loud.
    Short and sweet.

  7. For The Podcast:

Okay, this episode was amazing, but I swear Wells just put on the thinking cap only to figure out that water beats fire. Come on.

I would be okay with Iris staying as a speedster full time to be honest. She was amazing this episode. I loved how mediocre the white guys were - true to real life I suppose 🙂

Finally, FELIX FELIX FELIX FELIX FELIX. Just replace Ralph with him full time. I’m convinced that Trump supporting stretchy fuckboi is going to betray everyone anyway.

PS. Nina you are awesome. I love hearing you shoot the shit and everything. Keep up the great content please <3
