What’s going on, ProFans? I’m taking a break from this sweltering September heat to bring you the latest releases to home media for September 18, 2018. In this week’s episode, we discuss legacy thieves, the rise and fall of a hustler, dinosaurs, book burning, and superheroes. Let’s get to it.
Ocean’s 8 (PG-13) – NOTE: This film was released to home media on September 11, 2018
Metascore: 61
Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) has been playing the long con: she’s looking to steal millions of dollars of jewels from Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway) at the world famous Met Gala. Along with her partner-in-crime, Lou (Cate Blanchett) and a crew of specialists, they have to get in, get the jewels, and get out – all in plain sight. This film, which also stars Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, and Sarah Paulson, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital HD version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version, and a single disc DVD version. The Ocean’s series has always been a fun heist movie, and this is no exception to the rule. I highly recommend checking this out.
Superfly (R) – NOTE: This film was released to home media on September 11, 2018
Metascore: 52
Inspired by the 1972 classic blaxploitation film of the same name, this film follows Youngblood Priest (Trevor Jackson), a Atlanta-based cocaine dealer, as he tries to do one last job to get out of the business and settle down with his woman, Georgia (Lex Scott Davis). But, with all “one last job” situations, something invariably goes wrong. This film, which also stars Jason Mitchell, Michael K. Williams, and Jennifer Morrison, is available in a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version and a single disc DVD version. This film puts a new spin on a familiar tale, and it’s worth a rental.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (PG-13)
Metascore: 51
Four years after the destruction of Jurassic World, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) return to the doomed island to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from a volcanic eruption set to destroy the island. However, there are sinister forces moving to change the narrative and changing how we see dinosaurs forever. This film, which also stars Rafe Spall, Justice Smith, and Daniella Pineda, is available in a two disc 4K UltraHD/Blu-ray + Digital HD version, a two disc 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray + Digital HD version, a two disc Blu-ray/DVD + Digital HD version, and a single disc DVD version. The first Jurassic Park was a game changer that still holds up today. After that, it has been suffering under the law of diminishing returns. This will be no exception to the rule; only watch it if you are either a die-hard Chris Pratt fan or a die-hard dinosaur fan.
Fahrenheit 451
Metascore: 47
Based on the Ray Bradbury novel of the same name, this film shows a frightening future where the media is a drug, history is forgotten, and dissent is illegal. Michael B. Jordan plays Montag, a fireman who struggles to regain his humanity while fighting against his brutal mentor, fire captain Beatty (Michael Shannon). This film, which also stars Sofia Boutella, Lilly Singh, and Laura Harrier, is available in a single disc Blu-ray + Digital HD version and a single disc DVD + Digital HD version. This film paints a horrifying picture – one that is eerily similar to what could happen in this day and age. It’s well acted and visually interesting. Give it a watch.
Supergirl: The Complete Third Season
The third season of the CW series picks up with Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) at a crossroads: does she give up her human identity and live solely as Supergirl, or does she keep both identities and draw strength from the people she has sworn to protect? She also finds herself at odds with a Kryptonian named Reign, who threatens to tear the Earth apart. This series, which also stars Odette Annabele, Chyler Leigh, and Mechad Brooks, is available in a four disc Blu-ray + Digital HD version and a five disc DVD version. This season was pretty fun, with the addition of Annabele being a solid one. Check it out.
That’s all I’ve got for this week. Got any questions or comments? Did I forget something you wanted to discuss? Feel free to hit me up in the comments section below.
Until next time…
